How the Book Club works:

Each week, you’ll join a live session where you practise speaking in English by reflecting on part of a text you have been reading. You can read anything you are passionate about or that feels fun, challenging, or personally meaningful to you. That might be a short story, comic, novel, non-fiction book or even a TED Talk transcript.

(There is also a monthly shared read option that functions more like a traditional Book Club.)

You’ll use real communication frameworks to share ideas clearly, respond to others, and grow your confidence – all in an introvert-friendly environment where you are given time to think and plenty of space to talk.

Who it is for:

This is for thoughtful, motivated English speakers (roughly B2–C2 level) who want to feel more fluent and confident when they speak.

What you'll gain:

Clarity

Learn how to structure your thoughts so your ideas are easier for others to understand and remember.

Confidence

Build momentum, stay engaged, and start seeing real progress with your speaking skills.

Flexible fluency

Practice speaking spontaneously with complex and unexpected topics.

Raissa, Physician, The Democratic Republic of the Congo
"I feel inspired to do different types of speaking.... I have also gained confidence in my ability to organise my ideas as I speak."

Hello! If we haven't met, I'm

Sarah Rocha Coelho

For over 25 years, I’ve helped people express themselves clearly in English.

I’m originally from the UK, but I’ve lived in several countries, including Brazil, where I worked professionally in Portuguese. I know what it’s like to think deeply but struggle to say exactly what you mean in another language and how good it feels when you finally can!

As a professional educator, I’m qualified to teach both English literature and English as a second language. I’ve worked with native speakers and international learners alike – helping them find clarity, structure, and confidence in how they communicate.

I’m also neurodivergent and an introvert, so I’ve always been drawn to communication spaces that feel thoughtful and intentional.

Your next step:

It’s time to start speaking clearly even under pressure – without freaking out or faking extroversion.

FAQs

The weekly session is repeated at two times every Tuesday – 10:00 am and 6:00 pm UK time. This is so that you can choose whichever works best for your schedule and timezone.

Check what time that is in your local time here.

The optional Shared Read session (on the book of the month) takes place on the last Saturday of each month. We run a quick poll in advance to find a time that works for most people.

Each session follows a clear rhythm:

  • 10 minutes of reading (your chosen text)

  • 10 minutes of casual reflection and discussion

  • 10 minutes to shape a short two-minute response using a communication framework

  • 30 minutes of delivering your two-minute response and conversation in breakout rooms and as a group (time allowing).

Most speaking groups rely on random prompts and improvised chatter. Here, you’ll get:

  • Repetition to build fluency (something that is often missing in practice even though it is so helpful).

  • Time to think and prepare before you speak (i.e we value the gifts introverts bring!)

  • Speaking frameworks that help you express complex ideas clearly and naturally

It’s consistent, focused practice in a calm, supportive space.

After running a traditional book club for years, I’ve found that allowing participants to choose their own reading material leads to stronger engagement. You are free to read content that aligns with your interests, goals, and industry. This keeps the reading practice relevant and energising.

You are also free to choose any genre of text. You could choose a comic, poem, short story, article, novel, non-fiction book, or even a TED Talk transcript. Audiobooks are also welcome.

You can pick something light and fun, or more challenging and thought-provoking. The goal is to read something that sparks your interest and makes you want to speak.

Remember, there is also a traditional Book Club style session each month too where you can read and speak about the same book as others!

No, you don’t. However, it of course helps if you’ve done some reading that week and have a pen and paper nearby for the session.

No problem! There’s no required amount to read.

You’ll still be able to follow the flow of the session and you’ll be able to engage in conversations based on what others share. There is also a few minutes at the start of the session for reading that you can use to spark reflection. Bear in mind that long term you will get the most out of the Book Club if you do engage with reading in-between sessions.

The Five Minute Fluency custom gpt chatbot uses Chat GPT to function. You can access and use it with a free Chat GPT account. However, you will get far better output with a paid account and your usage will not be restricted. For best results, I recommend using it on Chat GPT Plus. It is very simple to use – basically requiring one click to get started. There is no complicated learning curve.

I offer a 14-day satisfaction guarantee. You can get a full refund within the first 14 days if you are not satisfied for any reason.

Beyond that, you can cancel at any time. You can do this yourself within the customer hub or can send me an email for me to do it for you.

The Read to Speak Book Club is for committed learners who understand the value of reading and high level speaking practice and are ready to take action. If you’re unsure, I encourage you to ask any questions before joining.
